Unless you kicked some serious butt in a crazily academic high school or took a bunch of classes at a local college, youre going to have to get some core classes out of the way, including single and multivariable calculus, physics (mechanics and EM), chemistry, and biology. No ifs, ands, or buts, you will take these classes (or pass out of them). There are a bunch of different classes, each of varying degrees of difficulty, in each of these topics to choose from, but thats for a later entry. I came to MIT wanting to be a mechanical engineer. I love building things, piecing things together, and constructing a product. I did not come to MIT to learn math, chemistry, or biology. As such, I struggled/didnt really enjoy these classes. Yes, I know, its MIT, were good at these classes, and as a whole MIT is very good, but individual students sometimes loathe these subjects. Over your four years at MIT youll experience a lot of things that make MIT seem like the big bully at the playground punching you repeatedly in your beautiful face, but one thing MIT really prides itself on is making sure you have an enjoyable and fair first semester here. MIT doesnt want to make you cry (though it happens), so they have this AWESOME system called Pass/No Record. Several bloggers, including Yan just a couple of days ago, have mentioned Pass/No Record (P/NR) but nobody has really discussed it. Heres the gist of it. At the end of your first semester here (September through December) you will get a set of grades, just like you normally do. The thing thats different between first semester MIT grades and any other grades is that ALL FIRST SEMESTER MIT GRADES ARE THE SAME. Thats right, you heard me, everybody will come out of first semester with the same GPA: 0. A zero GPA!? OH NOES! Oh yeses. Pass/No record means that if you pass a class you receive a P on your transcript. If you fail a class it shows that you never even took it. That means its impossible to have an F on your first semester transcript. Let me say that again. YOU CAN NOT GET AN F ON YOUR FIRST SEMESTER TRANSCRIPT The other side to that is that you cant get an A on your first semester transcript. YOU CAN NOT GET AN A ON YOUR FIRST SEMESTER TRANSCRIPT Which has several additional implications. YOU CAN NOT GET A B ON YOUR FIRST SEMESTER TRANSCRIPT and YOU CAN NOT GET A C ON YOUR FIRST SEMESTER TRANSCRIPT What you can get is a bunch of Ps. At MIT youll hear some Pass/No Record mentioned a lot. Youll hear sentences like Dude, just punt it, youre on pass/no record or Dont worry about it, youre a freshman or No. You didnt get an A. You got a P. Just like _________ over there having fun. You got the same grade only he had more fun. Upperclassmen are really careful not to let the freshmen tools brag about their straight As. Nobody likes a tool, nobody likes to hear about your Perfect GPA when everybody knows full well that the only thing you got was a 0 GPA and less time to meet new people and hang out with friends. Taking advantage of Pass/No Record is something else youll hear mentioned a lot. This can have several meanings. One is if you fail a class. Youre taking advantage since youll have no record. Another way to take advantage is to score the lowest possible passing score on everything and still get the same grade as everybody else. This is what I did. Its not like you can get by without working, I spent many sleepless nights and early mornings fighting my way through problems sets and working harder than Ive ever worked before, I just also spent a lot of time doing other things. I have pretty awesome proof that I took advantage of P/NR, like my first chemistry exam. Check out my score breakdown, per question. Righteous! Passed it! First two questions, rockin. Next two questions? **** Last question, pity points. Or, how about my third chemistry exam? The first and fifth questions were just so wrong! lol, its all good though, because it was P/NR and I ended up passing the class. The same with math and with physics (which I accidentally got a B in, go figure). I think I failed at least one test in every class except chemistry and still passed all of my classes. I also did a ton of other awesome fun things that I never got a chance to tell you about since I wasnt an MIT blogger back then. Basically, I loved first semester of freshman year, didnt mind getting Cs (and by Cs I mean Ps) in all of my classes, and I feel that Im better now for the relationships and other experiences I took advantage of than if I had locked myself in my room trying to get good grades that are invisible. In summary, here are the important things to take away from this: 1) As, Bs, and Cs all show up on your transcript as Ps first semester of freshman year 2) Ds and Fs dont show up at all 3) You have to retake the class you failed but it doesnt show up as having taken it before 4) Take advantage of P/NR, it only happens once

This paper will discuss why the airline industry has developed into an oligopoly, how price wars historically affected main carriers, why many startup carriers failed, and the advantages of price setting, variation in seat pricing and the advantages of collision of larger airlines. History The first successful flight occurred in 1903 with the Wright brothers in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This marked the beginning of the aviation industry. At first airplane travel was not popular. After the U. S. involvement in World War 1, the airline industry’s growth stagnated until 1927. When Charles Lindberg successfully completed a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean the industry began to evolve. A variety of air transport holding companies began to form, including American Airways, now know as American Airlines. In 1928, the Boeing Company and the United Aircraft and Transportation Corporation were developed. The United Aircraft and Transportation Corporation merged to form the United Airlines. This expanded the opportunities of carrying other forms of cargo, including passengers. In 1926, because of the massive amount of air traffic, the Air Commerce Act was passed and it allowed Federal regulations of air traffic rules to provide safety. There was not a lot of support to allow for research and development of aircrafts and air space. It was not until the World War II, where enough support was generated. Research provided a way for aircrafts to evolve into a more modernized industry. There were still many air collisions, due to the fact that there was a lack of an accurate system in place, which could monitor the air traffic precisely. This flaw allowed for the founding of the Federal Aviation System and this agency was charged to develop the air traffic control system, to minimize air collisions. In the years to follow, the number of passengers, and the cost of fuel increased dramatically. The Deregulation of 1978 brought the growth of smaller air carriers and mergers of the larger carriers. This act also marked the beginning of the air industry as it presently stands today. The Airline Deregulation Act Of 1978 Over the past 30 years, the airline industry has navigated away from the controlling over regulation strategies to almost no regulation at all. In the 1980’s, the Airline Deregulation Act was signed into law. The goals of the act were: to keep safety a priority; maximize reliance on competition in air transportation; avoid industry concentration, unreasonable increased prices, reduce service and exclusion of competition; and to encourage entry of new air carriers. This act contributed to the removal of government control over fares, routes, and market entry. The FAA still had regulatory powers over all aspects of airline safety, but the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) powers of regulation were eventually phased out. The CAB regulated all domestic interstate air transport route as a public utility. It set the airline fares; routes travelled, and set schedules. As a result of the act fare prices were lower, passenger loads has risen, and aircrafts can go on longer routes. Costs had also fallen and competition had increased dramatically. Various conflicts with labor unions for many carriers, there were many airliners that went bankrupt or liquidated due to deregulation. Point-to-point transport had declined in favor of the hub and spoke system for some until the growth of the low cost airlines. Southwest and Air Tran still dominate the airline industry to the present date. When these airlines started to multiply, they brought back the point to point service and they contributed to the development of wider range aircrafts types that are better and adaptable to various markets. Deregulation opened the opportunities for new jobs and new competition. Ticket prices were down because of the new competition. Service improved and the airline market expanded. There were also negative aspects to the act also. The act gave way to bitter price wars and contributed to a major wage inequality. Airlines began to cut costs to maximize profit, and that had a major impact on the wages of employees. There were many layoffs, retirement benefits were reduced, and new employees were hired at lower wages, all in the hopes of maximizing profits. The Living Wage Act was established to help those that were at the bottom of the â€Å"wage pool†. The living wage was, â€Å"a wage sufficient to provide the necessities and comforts essential to an acceptable standard of living† (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2010). Deregulation, opened the doors for many opportunities, good and bad. Oligopolies, start-up failures, unofficial price setting, variations in seat prices, and collusions are all products of deregulation. Airline Oligopoly The airline industry has developed into an oligopoly with several large carriers and numerous smaller carriers in many ways. The initial premise for the oligopoly was that larger the airlines would equate to greater efficiency, improved service and lower fares. A lot has to do with the deregulation act that permitted this oligopoly to occur. An oligopoly occurs when there are a number of major suppliers and they act strategically in the market based on the how the other suppliers make decisions. In the airline industry this is shown when one airline announces a fare increase to see if the other airliners would increase there fares. If there is not enough bite to the bait, the first airline then cancels the fare hike. An oligopoly of the airline industry causes a non competitive state and fewer airlines. Dominant airlines know that they would not have to compete for routes because they are the only option, especially in the hub and spoke markets. Airline Industry Price Wars After the deregulation of the airline industry, competition amongst the airlines has become very fierce. In the regulated environment, most of the cost increases were passed to consumers based on a fixed rate of return from pricing scheme. Labor unions had more power in the regulated environment. Newer carriers were able to compete with the established carriers, until the consolidation of the larger airlines began. Competition has resulted in lower air fares, frequent flier programs and has increased service frequency. Many airlines have gone out of business due to the fierce competition that can also be labeled as price wars, especially the newer airlines that were developed right after deregulation. A price war is the most severe form of competition in the market place, resulting in great losses (Heil and Helsen, 2001). Consumers are the only ones to benefit from a price war in the airline industry. They may have the lower fares, but they may also be losing out on quality of service. Historically, price wars have affected the main carriers by making them to lower their fares to compete with the smaller carriers. It has also caused the oligopoly of the larger carriers. Airline Startups Many startup carriers have failed historically because of the oligopoly that exists between the larger carriers within the airline industry, and the hub and spoke systems that are strategically in place. TECHNOLOGY Maruti Suzuki uses an innovative Compressed Natural Gas technology – the Intelligent Gas Port Injection (iGPI) on five of its models – the SX4, Eeco, WagonR, Estilo and Alto. The iGPI technology delivers more power and runs like a petrol-filled engine while achieving fuel-efficiency.The iGPI technology uses injectors for each cylinder and a particular amount of CNG is injection in the engine through gas ports. The Engine Control Unit controls the amount of CNG needed for each ride. Two components used by Maruti in cars such as the Maruti Omni to help increase fuel economy are the crankshaft sensor and knock sensor. They control the ignition timing and fuel injection. The crank shaft is a part of the car’s engine that translates its linear motion into rotation. The sensor is part of the internal combustion engine which monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft.The knock sensor is a part thatâ€⠄¢s linked to the car’s engine-when the car’s engine is not working it knocks on it and usually you hear the knocking sound. The knock sensor will send a signal to the Powercontrol Car Module (PCM). The Maruti Swift has a Direct Diesel Injection System engine. This engine has efficient combustion, higher torque and cleaner emissions. It is an extremely light engine and has a 75 bhp, 190 Nm of torque capacity. It has a five-step multi-injection technology that makes the car run more smoothly than other cars.It also has a Double Over Head Camshaft that gives the engine a quick run. It also has a Chain Drive Timing System. This engine is way better than the Maruti 800 engine which has a Single Over Head Camshaft and only two valves per cylinder while the Swift has sixteen-valve cylinder. The Maruti Suzuki SX4 has a Variable Valve Timing engine. According to the company, they will use K-Series engines in all car models. India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki decided to implement the K-series petrol engine in all the models for at least five years according to a company report.The K-Series engine is a straight four cylinder engine that comes in Single Overhead Camshaft and Double Overhead Camshaft variants. It is partly owned by the government of India and partly owned by the Japanese company, Suzuki Motor Corporation. Suzuki Motor Corporation, the parent company owns 54% of Maruti’s shares. Maruti’s cars are of European style but custom-made to cater to the local markets.Maruti Suzuki has launched the Grand Vitara, SX4 and the Swift as part of the worldwide strategy. Maruti Suzuki not only provides hatchbacks, mid and small level cars but also luxury cars. Maruti Suzuki has also launched another concept car called Kizashi which was showcased in the Frankfurt Motor Show and is now available in India. The Grand Vitara, which is an SUV and Kizashi, which is a sports sedan are imported from Japan as completely built units(CBU). Maruti Suzuki is sold in China by Jiangnan Auto. The company has launched the car at Rs. 1. 24 lakhs.Four companies that produced the Maruti 800 in China are: Chang’an Auto, Jiang Nan, Xi’an Tai and Sichuan Auto Maruti Suzuki also has office in Japan. Indian engineers sometimes travel to Japan to work on Maruti cars and Japanese engineers sometimes travel to India to provide their expertise for Maruti Suzuki. ————————————————- Exports Maruti Suzuki exports entry-level models across the globe to over 100 countries and the focus has been on identifying new markets. The company exports to the United Kingdom, Italy, Hungary, Netherlands, Germ any, Latin America, Africa, Philippines and Indonesia.Along with these countries, Maruti also sells its cars to Algeria, Chile, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The company exported 38,000 passenger cars in 2006-2007, around 6. 4 per cent of its total sales. The car that contributes most to Maruti’s export income is the A-Star model. In 2007, Maruti got an export order of 11,000 units of the Zen Estilo to Indonesia and 1,500 units of the Maruti Alto to the Philippines, become the initial car manufacturer to export to South East Asia. Maruti crossed the cumulative half-a-million export mark in February 2008, becoming the first Indian car company to export half-a-million units.Maruti has tied up with the Mundra post for development of port facilities for export shipments through Pune Car Carriers. Maruti is experimenting with new car models in an effort to stay ahead of its competition and will be responsible for 25 per cent of Suzuki, its parent company’s, revenues. In the financial year 2010-2011 Maruti Suzuki reported a net sales figure of 37,522 crore rupees. Maruti will invest in a new plant in Gujarat which will produce 6 million units a year which is being done in an effort to make the company the leader in the car market. The company is having a look at different plants as shown by the Government of India.In another effort, Maruti will introduce four new cars in the Indian market: The mass-market hatchback, a utility vehicle, a new and improved Swift, and a unique SX4. The company plans to release the design of the YE3, the hatchback by June-July 2011 while the car will actually be shown in the Auto Expo 2012. The company plans to design the YE3 without any involve ment of Suzuki which is a major feat since most of its cars have been designed in collaboration with Suzuki in the past. The YE3 will be a four-door, four seat hatchback and will be available in a 600-800cc engine and a five speed manual transmission.The company also plans to launch the Maruti R3 under a different name. The Maruti R3 is a Multi-Utility Vehicle that will come in a Rs. 7 lakhs – Rs. 9 lakhs ex-showroom price and is a six-seater compact van strapped with three rows of seats and rear-hinged rear doors. The car will come in both 1. 2 litre K-Series engines and a 1. 6 litre Variable Valve Timing engine, each of which have been present in the popular models of Swift and SX4. The R3 will compare to an Innova. The company plans to sell it in emerging markets. It will be showcased in the Auto Expo 2012.The company plans to get a diesel engine for the car from Volkswagen. The third new model of Maruti, the new Swift will be launched by July 2011 will a 1. 3 litre multi- jet diesel engine and a 1. 2 litre K-Series engine. The new Swift fall in the Rs. 3. 5 – 5. 5 lakhs bracket depending on the model and approximately 17,000 units will be produced each year. Along with coming up with new cars and new plants, Maruti is also expanding its transportation capacity. The company has forged partnerships for this with the Adani group to set up a mega car terminal at the Mundra port.
